Requirements To Obtain A VISA To Enter India

Passport Information

  • Passport must be valid 6 months beyond intended stay.

  • The original passport must be submitted and should have at least two blank visa pages for processing.

  • Non U.S. Citizens must provide a notarized copy, front and back of a U.S. Green card or I-94; in order to have a visa processed.

  • Only applicants who reside in the current Houston TX jurisdiction of the Indian Consulate will be accepted applicants who reside in (Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana,Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska and Texas) will be able to have visas processed in Houston Texas jurisdiction.

Tourist Visa

  • Submit your valid, signed Passport, must have at least 6 months remaining.
  • Non U.S. Citizens must provide a notarized copy, front and back of a valid U.S. Green card or I-94; in order to have a visa processed.
  • The U.S. Green Card or I-94 must have been issued within the last 2 years and the applicant should have proof of status that has been valid longer than two years.

  • 1 Visa Application Form - Link - fully completed online and (signed inside the box and on the second page). - Visa applications must have a bar code upon completion. Applications without the barcode will not be accepted. Please make sure that application is completed accurately, all information on passport must be duplicated on the visa application as written, i.e. passport information page. Any inaccurate information may cause an application to be rejected and delayed at the applicants expense. (All applications must be marked as multiple entry)
  • The Application Form should be printed on 2 separate sheet of paper, no front to back print out will be accepted. Note: Please make sure that the Application Form prints completely with the port of entry and exit completely printed at the bottom as well as the bar code.

  • 2 Passport-type photographs taken without glasses are required.

  • Copy of round trip airline tickets or itinerary, or letter of confirmation from travel agent
  • For Minors- The second page of the Application form needs to be signed by both parents and notarized
  • Please Note- Copy of birth certificate/ containing the picture and signature page of both parents along with copies of both parents Driver License
  • A copy of the applicants drivers license - Applications will not be accepted without a valid copy.
  • Naturalized U.S. Citizens who are of Indian origin, must provide School Diploma, Birth Certificate and a photo copy of his or her Indian Passport. (Please call for more information regarding India renunciation)

  • The Visa Request Form - Link, is required for the completion of the visa.
  • There is not a required time of entry in order to activate the visa, no 90 day rule, if it is not used before the expiration date, then it will expire.

Business Visa

  • A Business Letter of Guarantee - Link is required, to be typewritten on your company letterhead and addressed to: Consulate General of India/Visa Section/ Houston TX., That must clearly explain the purpose of travel; Guarantee financial support for the visit and return transportation; the letter should be signed by an officer or manager of the company, other than the applicant. (Please request you desired length of visa within the body of the business letter of guarantee. The length of time selected on the application should match the what is requested in the letter of guarantee. (Example - If requesting 6month, 1year or 5 year.)

  • Letter of Invite from the company you are visiting in India ( Fax copy is fine). The length of stay on the invitation must match what is on the application. Copy of round trip airline tickets or itinerary, or letter of confirmation from travel agent.

  • A copy of the applicants drivers license - Applications will not be accepted without a valid copy.
  • Naturalized U.S. Citizens who are of Indian origin, must provide School Diploma, Birth Certificate and a photo copy of his or her Indian Passport. (Please call for more information regarding India renunciation)

  • A copy of the inviting organizations Certificate of Incorporation.

  • The Visa Request Form - Link, is required for the completion of the visa.

  • Your visit to India must be completed prior to the expiration of the visa, or prior to end of the period of stay granted by India Immigration authorities, whichever comes first.
  • There is not a required time of entry in order to activate the visa, no 90 day rule, if it is not used before the expiration date, then it will expire.

Work/Employment Visa

  • Non U.S. Citizens must provide a notarized copy, front and back of a valid U.S. Green card or I-94; in order to have a visa processed.
  • The U.S. Green Card or I-94 must have been issued within the last 2 years and the applicant should have proof of status that has been valid longer than two years.
  • All India Employment Visa applications requests must have all information completed prior to submission. If documents are missing once submitted to the consulate, the consulate reserves the right to deny any visa request and all consular fees will not be returned.
  • 1 Visa Application Form - Link - fully completed online and (signed inside the box and on the second page). Visa applications must have a bar code upon completion. Applications without the barcode will not be accepted. Please make sure that application is completed accurately, all information on passport must be duplicated on the visa application as written, i.e. passport information page.   • Naturalized US citizens that are from Indian Origin must provide their most recent Indian Passport with the renunciation latter and a $20 money order payable to the Consulate.  If the applicant has NOT renounced their Indian citizenship, or cannot show proof, the following must be provided: (All applications must be marked as multiple entry)
    • Two (2) copies of the completed renunciation form - https://www.indian-visa.com/pdf/Renunciation_Form.pdf. This form is current as of May 14, 2010. Disregard all prior versions.
    • Renunciation fee of $175 paid with a separate Money Order payable to 'Consulate General of India’. If the applicant is applying in the Washington DC jurisdiction, the Money Order should payable to 'Embassy of India'.
    • Copy of Naturalization Certificate - to be provided only in cases where US passport is issued on or after June 1, 2010 while naturalization took place on or before May 31, 2010. For minors who were not issued naturalization certificates, the parents must write a statement that the minors citizenship was obtained through the parents, and provide a copy of the parents naturalization certificate.
    • Most recent Indian passport and applicant must provide photocopies of the first three pages of the passport and the last two pages of the passport.

  • 2 Passport-type photographs taken without glasses are required.
  • Those born in India can use their birth certificate, old Indian passport or school leaving certificate.
  • Those not born in the US or India should submit a birth certificate or any government document from the country of origin that has parents name, date of birth and nationality. The documents must be translated into English and notarized. The copy must be legible and in English. We can provide a translations services upon request.
  • A Business Letter of Guarantee - Link is required, to be typewritten on your company letterhead and addressed to: Consulate General of India/Visa Section/ Houston TX., That must clearly explain the purpose of travel; Guarantee financial support for the visit and return transportation; the letter should be signed by an officer or manager of the company, other than the applicant.   • Contract Letter: An employment contract letter. The letter must be detailed and comprehensive

  • A copy of the applicant’s driver license or utility bill - Applications will not be accepted without a valid copy.
  • A recent copy of the applicants resume.
  • A copy of any work or trade certifications/certificates.
  • Justification Letter: A letter from the employer in India certifying that applicant is a skilled and qualified professional, technical expert, senior executive or in a managerial position. This letter should also justify as to how those kinds of skills are not available in India.
  • A copy of the organizations proof of corporate registration in India.
  • Project Details / Annex II Form: The Project Details Form must be completed on company letterhead. Every question must be answered, no 'N/A' answers are allowed.   • The Visa Request Form - Link, is required for the completion of the visa.
  • Tax ID letter from the company in India on the company letter head from India that states and certifies the following information:
  • Foreigners being hired will not exceed 1% of the total workforce. Within 1% it should not exceed more than 20 employees.  In case the number of employees is within 1% but moor than 20 employees, applicants would understand that there may be a delay in decisions made on the issuance of the visa.
  • Appointment Letter: An employment appointment letter that contains the salary information. The salary must be a handsome amount.
  • For minors, a proof of address from either parents or a legal guardian may be submitted instead. Parents' Passport Copies: A copy of the vital page(s) containing the picture and signature page of both parents signed passports. For Minor Applicants only
  • Your visit to India must be completed prior to the expiration of the visa, or prior to end of the period of stay granted by India Immigration authorities, whichever comes first.

  • An Employment Visa is granted to those who are an employee of an Indian company. The Embassy/Consulate may grant Employment visa valid for a year irrespective of the duration of the contract. Further extension up to 5 years could be obtained from MHA/FRRO in the concerned state in India. Please note the visa is valid beginning on the day it is issued. So a 6 Month visa issued on January 1 would be valid until June 30. Application: Complete the online India Visa Application.
  • Short Term Visa Holders: Applicants who are not citizens/residents of the USA and hold a tourist or other short-term visa for the USA should normally apply for Indian visas in the country of their permanent residence. In case of emergency or special circumstance, an application could be made at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC or Consulates General of India in the USA. In addition to the relevant visa fee there is a reference fee of $20.00 for reference to be made to the country of their original residence. The processing time in such cases is usually 5-7 working days. (Non US Citizens - Short Term Visa Holders Only)
  •   Persons of Indian Origin: Applicants born in India applying for the first time on ANY U.S. passport must submit their Indian passport and a completed renunciation form (http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/pdf/renunciation.pdf) OR submit their expired US passport with a previously issued Indian visa if applicable. (United States Citizens Only)
  • Dual Citizenship: Applicants who have dual citizenship with the US and another country must apply on their US passport if living in the US. (Non US Citizens Only)
  • Long Term Visa Holders Registration:

    Registration formalities for foreigners visiting India on Long Term Visa

    (ix) Two copies of the approval of Government of India in case of a joint venture or a collaboration.
    (x) Terms and conditions of appointments and copy of contract or agreements, in case of employment visa.
    (xi) Undertaking (in the format given below) from the concerned Indian company on the following lines in case of employment/business visa: -

Q. What is a visa? And why do I need one.
A. A visa is a stamp that is affixed to a blank visa page in your passport that is required by foreign countries before you are able to enter their territory.

Q. Do I need to send you my passport in order to receive a visa?
A. Yes, your passport must be submitted with the required paperwork and photos in order to obtain a visa for traveling outside the USA. For visa service in Houston, you can drop off your passport at our agency.

All U.S. Citizens who are traveling by air will now be required to carry a U.S. Passport.

Adults over 19 years of age will require a passport if traveling outside the U.S. by car, including Canada and Mexico.

U.S. Citizens 19 and under do not require a U.S. Passport if they are traveling outside the U.S. by land or sea.

Closed Loop Cruises: U.S. Citizens who board a cruise ship at a port within the United States, travel only within the Western Hemisphere, and return to the same U.S. port on the same ship may present government-issued photo identification, along with proof of citizenship (an original birth certificate or a Consular report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization).

Note - You may still be required to present a passport card or passport book to enter the foreign country to which you are traveling.  Please contact your cruise line to verify which documents are required for your trip.
